MONDAY
Q.         Who was the National League Most Valuable Player Award after losing all of the previous season to military service (and most of the one prior to that)?
Hint:     He holds the single season National League record for home runs hit during the 1950s.
Hint:     Despite this (and partly due to military service), his home run total is seventh highest in that decade.
Twint:    He is named for Miller Huggins' law school professor.
A.         WILLIE MAYS (1954 MVP vote; 51 HR in 1955; 250 HRs 1950-59 though he only played 7 full seasons in that span.  Trails Snider 326, Hodges 310, Mathews 299, Mantle 280, Musial 266 & Berra 256; William Howard Taft)

Hint:     Only one American League player and one National League player have eclipsed that season total in the 65 seasons since.
Twint:    After his rookie year, he was an All-Star every year he appeared in more than six games.
A.         TED WILLIAMS (145 RBIs 1939, 159 RBI 1949 tied with teammate Vern Stephens; Manny Ramirez AL165 RBI in1999 then Sammy Sosa NL160 RBI in 2001; Williams missed 1943-45 for WWII, had only 6 G in 1952 when he went to Korea.  He did make the AS team in 1953 despite playing in only 37 G.)

Incorrect answers:  Joe DiMaggio, Hank Greenberg, Stan Musial, Al Simmons, Chuck Klein, Lou Gehrig

Hint:     Despite playing for the same franchise for over twenty years, he doesn't have the franchise lead in any career offensive category.
Hint:     That sting is somewhat removed by his representing them for fifteen consecutive years in the All-Star game.
Twint:    He holds the record for hitting into the most triple plays with four.  No one else has even done it more than twice since the 1920s.
Twint:    Sparky Anderson said he was seeing this player in his sleep, and added "If I dropped this paper plate, he'd pick it up on one hop and throw me out at first"
Twint:    And Johnny Bench said "I will become a left-handed hitter to keep the ball away from that guy."
