Hint: #1  Only one player has ever been a member of more World Series championship teams.

A.  JOE DiMAGGIO  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  He was known as “Joltin’ Joe”.  He did jolt 148 homers out of Yankee Stadium.

-  #1  DiMaggio was a Yankee when they won the World Series in: 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1947, 1949, 1950 & 1951.

-  #2  In only his 46th game in MLB, DiMaggio hit 2 HR in the 5th inning on 24-Jun-1936, 1each  off Red Evans & Ray Phelps of CHW.

-  #1  He was it the first Tiger to  take to the skies.

-  #2  His nerves were tried when the Tigers owner died and Cochrane took over some of the day-to-day responsibilities of running the team.  On 04-Jun-1936, he hit an IPHR as at of his team’s 10-run 3rd inning.  He was good to play again in 10 weeks.  Details here.

-  Ans. Beltre cycled 01-Sep-2008, 24-Aug-2012 & 3-Aug-2013.  Five other players have thrice hit for the cycle: Bob Meusel, Babe Herman, Trea Turner &  Christian Yelich.

-  #1  When asked why he didn’t wear a cup when competing, he pointed to his hands & said, “What are these for?”

-  #2  For he many doubters who have expressed that they don’t think Adrian Beltre belongs in the Hall of Fame

A.  GEORGE SISLER  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  An MVP in 1922 (as they existed then) but an eye infection cost him his entire age 30 season.  He returned as an excellent player and a leader on his team, but was never able to put up an offensive level matching what he had 1916-1922.

-  #1  Sisler had 200 hits in a season 4 X for the St. Louis Browns of the AL: 257* in 1920, 216 in 1921, 246 on 1922 & 201 in 1927.  Playing for the NL’s Boston Braves in 1929,  he had 205 hits.

-  #2  Sisler got at least one hit in 41 consecutive games in 1922.  It stood as the AL record until broken by Joe DiMaggio in 1941.

*Sisler’s 257 H in 1920 was the MLB record until Ichiro Suzuki broke it & hit 262 in 2004 for SEA.

-  Ans.  Clarke did it twice!  In 1902 he led the team to a 103-36-3 record to set a new NL record.  They didn’t play in the World Series because the modern version didn’t exist until the following season, 1903.  In 1909, Clarke, who was a player/manager for 18 of his 19 years as manager, led the team to a 110-42-2 record & a victory over the Tigers in the World Series.

-  #1  Clarke broke in w/Louisville on 30 Jun-1894 with 4 singles & a triple.

-  #1  Klein’s 400 total bases seasons were 1929 (405), 1930 (445) & 1932 (420).  Todd Helton, Rogers Hornsby & Sammy Sosa had 2 each.

-  #2  His 44 OF assists came in (Go on.  Guess which one… ) 1930.  He only finished 4th in MVP voting that year, but the competition was record-setting.

-  Ans.  For the Red Sox in 1943, Cronin put himself in to pinch-hit and homered on 15-Jun-1943(1),

17-Jun-1943(1), 17-Jun-1943(2), 09-Jul-1943 & 12-Aug-1943(2), HRs #161-165 of his 170-HR career.  No American Leaguer has hit more, although 3 NLers have more.

-  #1  All of his HRs in 1943 were of the pinch-hit variety.

-  #2  His 1,071 W’s top the list.  In total, there were 11 Hall of Famers who have managed BOS.

-  #3  Cronin was AL MVP for the Senators in 1930 & 2nd behind Jimmie Foxx in 1933.
