-  Ans.  Lajoie hit .426 in 1901 for PHA.

-  #1  Played & managed CLE 1905-09.

-  #2  BLIBB = 23-May-1901, 9th inning.  Hall of Fame manager Clark Griffith, player-manager of CHW, intentionally walked Lajoie with the bases loaded as a strategic move to minimize the damage Lajoie could do.  Griffith’s strategy worked.  The White Sox won the G 11-9.

Hint: #2  He was the first player to hit a grand slam on Opening Day in the Modern Era.  Three of the four runners who scored on that hit are now in the Hall of Fame.

-  Ans.  Terry hit .401 in 1930 playing 1B for NYG.

-  #1  Terry was the manager NYG when they won the WS in 1933 & the NL pennants in 1936, 1937.  In 1933 & 36 he also played.

-  #2  In Philadelphia on 12-Apr-1927, the visiting Giants’ first baseman homered in the 5th inning off PHI starter Hal Carlson with 3 men on, Ty Tyson, Edd Roush Scores & Rogers Hornsby.

WEDNESDAY  — 06-Nov

Q.  Which one-time Yankee was the last American League right fielder to start a triple play?

Hint: #1  He once hit forty plus home runs for three consecutive seasons.

Hint: #2  A trade he was involved in was once memorialized in an episode of the television show “Seinfeld”.

A.  JAY BUHNER   [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  In the 5th inning on 30Aug-1992, BAL's Mike Devereaux hit a deep fly ball to right-CF.  RF Buhner made a running catch near the wall for the 1st out.  Baserunners Brady Anderson & Randy Milligan had begun running, anticipating no catch.  From his knees, Buhner threw to 2nd baseman Bret Boone who stepped on 2nd base doubling off Milligan then relayed the ball to Tino Martinez at1st base.  Tino tagged the base to retire Anderson.  It was the 8th triple play in Mariners' franchise history.  It was the 3rd time the Orioles were involved in a triple play that month.  They hit into 1 on 07-Aug vs. CLE & turned 1 themselves on 25-Aug vs. CAL.  The NL’s J.D. Drew did likewise on 01-Aug-2022.

-  #1  1995 = 40 HR; 1996 = 44; 1997 = 40, all for SEA.

-  #2  On 21-Jul-1988, Buhner was traded by NYY, Rick Balabon & a player to be named later to SEA for Ken Phelps.  Buhner thrived in Seattle & is still a popular presence in the city, more than 2 decades after his playing days.  Phelps, however, never reached his potential.  {Snip of “Seinfeld” episode.}

-  #2  In 1938, Foxx had 104 RBI in Fenway Park.  He had 175 overall for the year.

Hint: #2  This one-time MVP shortstop’s record for runs-batted-in for one season is the most for his Franchise since it moved from St. Louis and changed its team name from Browns to Orioles.

-  Ans.  In 2002, Tejada had 204 H + 0 3B for OAK.  He repeated the feat 4 years later, this time for BAL.  In 2006 he had 214 H + 0 3B.  Full list.

Hint: #1  His cycle was somewhat overlooked because a teammate had a better game the same day.

Hint: #2  His exploits in the Rocky Mountains presaged the breakthrough of a later teammate.

Hint: #3  A medical condition he had all his life eventually cost him his life.

A.  TONY LAZZERI   [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Lazzeri played for NYY in 1937 and against them in 1938, playing for CHC.  Lazzeri was released by NYY 15-Oct-1937 then signed by CHC 28-Oct-1937.

-  #1  In Lazzeri’s historic cycle, the HR he hit on 03-Jun-1932, was a grand slam.  However, teammate Lou Gehrig hit four (4!) home runs in that same game. 

-  #2  Playing for the AA PCL ‘s Bees in 1925, Lazzeri need all 197 G when he hit 60 HR.  Babe Ruth hit his 60th HR in 1927.  Lazzeri’s 60 marked the first time that total had been reached in organized baseball.  Salt Lake City’s altitude of 4,200+ feet likely contributed at least some.

-  #3  Lazzeri was plagued by epileptic seizures.  Coaches and management knew, but it was hidden from the fans and it never affected Lazzeri’s play on the field.  In 1946, after he retired, Lazzeri tragically passed away due to a seizure-related fall.

-  Ans.  Molina’s memoir,( full title, “Molina: The Story of the Father Who Raised an Unlikely Baseball Dynasty”), pays tribute to his father Benjamin & highlights the role his father played in his & his brothers' careers.  Molina played for the Arizona Western College Matadors before signing a professional contract.

-  #1  Molina was traded from SFG to TEX on 01-Jul-2010.  SFG bested TEX in the 2010 WS, overseen by the furrowed brow of the TEX GM.  Molina, however, was the real winner because he was assured a share of the winners’ WS purse irrespective of victor.

-  Ans.  In the bottom of the 8th on 16-May-2010, Rivera entered the G with the bases loaded & walked Jim Thome to score a run.  Kubel was up next & hit a line drive to deep RF that cleared the fence.  One person in attendance remarked that the crowd of 46,628 in Yankee Stadium, went dead silent.

-  #1  HR at the Home Opener of MIN’s Target Field, 12-Apr-2010 off BOS’s Scott Atchison.

-  #2  Kubel hit 12 HR in July 2012 for ARI is still that franchise record.
