2018-10-08 Pitch grips and pairs of pitchers who mastered them

08-Oct-2018

Q.        Who are the first two pitchers to strike out five consecutive batters in a single All‑Star game?
A.         Carl Hubbell & Fernando Valenzuela—Hubbell, after giving up a single to Charlie Gehringer and walking Heinie Manush in the top of the 1st in the 1934 ASG, fans, in order, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig & Jimmie Foxx, leaving the runners stranded.  Top of the 2nd, he strikes out Al Simmons and Joe Cronin, not the immortals from inning #1, but Hall of Famers nonetheless.  Bill Dickey, having none of it, singles to end the streak.  A legendary performance that still stands out in baseball history and coming the 2nd ever ASG, seals the destiny of the Mid-Summer Classic in fans’ (and owners’) hearts.
After Dickey singled, Lefty Gomez struck out.  For years afterward, Gomez chided Dickey for getting the hit, claiming that had Dickey also struck out, he (Gomez) too would always been included as one of seven straight Hall of Famers whiffed by Hubbell.
Valenzuela matched the straight Ks in the 1986 ASG, Call Ripken being the only HofF’er (but with a couple others, Mattingly and Whitaker who have a long shot)
FCR -  Steve Krevisky, Middletown, Connecticut
Incorrect guesses:  Pedro Martinez, Lefty Gomez J.R. Richard, Roger Clemens, Walter Johnson, Dwight Gooden, Johnny Vander Meer
