MONDAY  — 26-Jun

Q.  Who is the only pitcher to strike out twenty batters in a nine-inning game twice?

Hint: #1  In two separate seasons, he led the majors in with an ERA under 2.00 and each time playing for a team in a different league.

Hint: #2  He was the first American League pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards.

A.  ROGER CLEMENS   [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  On 26-Apr-1986, at home in Fenway, Clemens struck out 20 Seattle Mariners, poor Phil Bradley striking out all 4 times he came to the plate that night.  A full decade later, 18-Sep-1996, he put down 20 Tigers in Detroit, showing the first time was no fluke.  Travis Fryman took the honors this time as the only Tiger w/4 Ks that evening.

-  #1  In 1990 w/BOS he tallied a quite nifty ERA of 1.93.  Then in 2005, pitching for the still NL Astros his final read was an impressive 1.87.

-  #2  Clemens won 7 CYA’s in all, his 1st 4 being 1986*, 1987, 1991 & 1997, tying him with Steve Carlton & Greg Maddux who each had won 4 in the Senior Circuit.   [*unanimous]

-  #2  Berra hit a HR on Opening Days in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958.  Two more players have also done this—Todd Hundley & Gary Carter.  (Interesting that all are catchers!)

-  Ans.  Cobb’s record was 248 H in 1911, his MVP year.  Sisler sailed right by that with 257 H in 1920.  In 2004, Ichiro Suzuki became the current record holder when he rapped out 262 H.

-  #1  Sisler won the AL MVP playing for the St. Louis Browns in 1922.  The franchise moved east in 1954 & the team was renamed the team the Orioles.  In 1964, Robinson was voted AL MVP.  Since then, Orioles Frank Robinson (1966), Boog Powell (1970) & Cal Ripken (1983, 1991) have received that honor.

-  #1  In 1941, Camilli led NL with 34 HR & 120 RBI.  It was more than enough, however, to win the NL MVP.

-  #2  Frank Camilli was a professional heavyweight boxer who fought under the name Frankie Campbell, winning 33 of his 40 career fights.  ‘Campbell’ was killed in the ring by future heavyweight champion Max Baer on 25-Aug-1930, in San Francisco.  The diagnosis was a cerebral hemorrhage.
