1955, but recovered well enough, fast enough to be in CLEs Opening Day Lineup In 1956.
-
#2 In G1 of the 1954 WS, Wertz was close to become the 1st
batter to have 5 H in 1 WS G in the Modern Era (since 1901). Many players had hit 4 H. Wertz tripled in the 1st inning,
singled in both the 4th & 6th then doubled in the 10th,
but was robbed of another extra-base hit by this play
in the 8th, 1 of the most famous outs in baseball history. It wasn’t until 28 years later the feat of 5
H in 1 WS G was achieved. MIL’s Paul Molitor
banged out 5 in G1 of the
1982 Fall Classic.
-
#3 On 10-April-1955, Wertz appeared on Ed Sullivan’s Toast

-
Ans. Northey led the majors with his 29 IBBs in 1944 for PHI while playing
on the lowest-scoring team in the NL. In 1969, Willie McCovey of the SFG was
given first base free 45 times
That record that stood for 33 years until Barry Bonds drew 68
in 2002. The current record, set in
2004 by Bonds, is an untouchable 120. In
1944, PHI team management thought that a change of mascot would somehow change
their fortunes. Blue Jays was their
choice. Read more here.
-
#1 On 20-July-1947, after Umpire Beans Reardon mistakenly signaled that
Northey's long fly had gone into the center field stands, Northey jogged
around the bases only to discover opposing Dodgers catcher Bruce
Edwards awaiting him at the plate with the ball where Northey was ruled
tagged out. Northey’s Cardinals protested because of Reardon’s errant call,
claiming Northey slowed his pace when he was led to believe by Reardon that he
had hit the ball over the fence. NL Prez Ford Frick ruled in favor of the
Cardinals, and declared Northey’s hit a home run.
- #2 In 1956
& 1957, Northey played in 105 straight MLB G, all as a pinch-hitter. He was removed for a pinch-runner every time,

-

his 16th of the G & his 383rd of that season. With that K, he passed record holder Sandy
Koufax who had mowed down 382 NL batters in 1965. Ryan’s record still stands.
