Q.  Who was the first native of the Dominican Republic to be enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame?

Hint: #1  He was appointed by Dominican President Leonel Fernández to a cabinet position in his government.  He (not Fernandez) was the first of five who have served in that position.

-  Ans.  In the offense-happy season of 1930, Wilson had 191 RBI (reported then as 190).

-  #1  MLB is hesitant to change any historically accepted number unless over whelming evidence is submitted.  Looks like this one whelmed sufficiently:  Hack Wilson / MLB.  Either way, seem Ruth was correct.

-  #2  Wilson’s 56 HR in 1930 stood as the NL standard until both Sammy Sosa and Mark  McGwire broke it in 1998.

THURSDAY  — 05-Dec

Q.  Who was the last player to hit two home runs in one All-Star game?

Hint: #1  He was initially drafted as a shortstop, but finished his career having played more games at another position than any other National League player ever had.

Hint: #2  His last hit, a double, was celebrated as much as any of his more than three hundred home runs.

A.  GARY CARTER  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  It was in 1981 in Cleveland in front of 72,086 fans, the 4th of Carter’s 11 ASG appearances.  In the 5th inning he homered off Ken Forsch in Forsch’s only AL AS G.  Carter then sealed his fate as the G’s MVP when he homered off Ron Davis in the 7th.  It was the last time the award was called the Commissioner's Trophy.

-  #1  It was the Expos' farm director Mel Didier who was impressed with Carter's play at SS that he wanted Carter drafted and turned into a catcher.  Carter played C in 2,056 MLB games.  However, his total has been eclipsed.

-  #2  Carter’s last hit.  He hit 324 HR in his MLB career.

Hint: #2  In addition to his prowess as a player, his biggest contributions to the game were off the field.

A.  JOHN WARD  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Pitching for Providence in 1878, Ward posted an ERA of 1.51 with a record of 22-13.  On 17-Jun-1980, Ward threw the second perfect game ever recorded.  Had he done it a week earlier, he would have been the first.

-  #1  Ward’s SB title was in 1887, however, a stolen base then is not the same as a stolen base in Modern Era.  [A good explanation.]

-  #2  Ward was a practicing lawyer & was instrumental in advancing players’ rights.  He organized baseball’s first union—the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players; he founded a league to compete with the NL—the Players League it was called; and was a manager in the majors for 8 seasons.  [Read more.]

-  #2  No one has a higher career slugging percentage than Charlie Lindstrom’s 3.000.  He is the only non-pitcher to ever triple in his only career at-bat.  The 3 pitchers to do it were Eric Cammack, Scott Munninghoff & Eduardo Rodriguez.  Charlie’s story.

-  Ans.  This G was the 2nd of Johnny Vander Meer’s consecutive no hitters, 15-Jun-1938.  Lombardi was behind the plate for both.  Home plate umpire for the 2nd G was Bill Stewart.  He opined, “Give some credit to Lombardi,… (his) judgment was just as perfect and just as important as Vander Meer’s pitches.”

-  #1  On 08-May-1935, after he had singled in the 2nd, Lombardi doubled off PHI’s Syl Johnson in the 6th, off Orville Jorgens in the 7th, off Euel Moore in the 8th & Frank Pearce in the 9th.
