-   Ans.     On 02-May-1939 Lou Gehrig took himself out of the lineup… for good.  Rookie Hutchinson entered the G in the 6th, pitched to 12 batters, got 2 outs and was lifted with an ERA of 108.00.  Was on the AL AS team in 1951.  Pitched 3 innings, giving up singles to Al Dark & Jackie Robinson and a HR to Gil Hodges.

-   #1   On his way to a complete game victory on 29-Aug-1947 in St. Louis, DET’s Hutchinson hit a 3B in the 3rd & stole home after the next batter struck out, for what proved to be the winning margin.

-   #2   The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is multi-building campus in the Seattle area.  Opened in 1956 by Hutchinson’s older brother, William P. Hutchinson.  After the death of his brother in 1964, the institution was re-dedicated and renamed in his memory.

-   #1   Pitched in MLB for 18 seasons and had 17 shutouts.

Hint: #1    He and three of his teammates famously specialized in a single type of pitch one season and nearly grabbed a pennant by so doing.

A. MICKEY HAEFNER  [B-R Bio]

-   Ans.     While 1946 AL champs BOS waited for the outcome of the NL pennant race, a select AL squad was chosen to keep the Sawks sharp.  During that tune-up G at Fenway Park on 01-Oct, Haefner accidentally plunked Williams on the elbow with an errant knuckleball. The injured Williams was ineffective in that WS (his only one), batting .200 with 5 singles, as the underdog STL defeated BOS in 7 G.

-   #1   In 1945, knuckleball aces Haefner, Dutch Leonard, Johnny Niggeling and Roger Wolff started 111 of the Senators' 154 games and accounted for 60 of the club's 87 victories.  They finished a scant 1.5 G behind DET in the tight AL pennant race.

-   #2   Haefner was born in Lenzburg, Illinois and died in neighboring New Athens 82 years later.

At the age of 15, McDermott’s father changed his birth certificate to make Mickey appear 18 years old.  BOS GM Joe Cronin, found out McDermott was only 15.  In the final deal McDermott got a $5,000 signing bonus and his dad received two truckloads of Ballantine Beer.

-   #1   Norman Rockwell’s “The Rookie”, is a picture based on McDermott’s making the Red Sox roster.  Shown is "the rookie", actually Sherman Safford, a high school athlete from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, who was asked to model for the painting.  The artwork appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post edition of 02-Mar-1957. Rockwell depicts an eager McDermott arriving in the BOS dressing area surrounded by the team’s wary veterans preparing for that day’s contest.  It’s not hard to make out Ted Williams and Jackie Jensen.

-   #2   Maurice McDermott, Sr. was replaced at 1st base on the 1924 Hartford Senators in the Class A Eastern League by Gehrig, and so hoped his son could make it to the majors.
