TUESDAY  —05-Apr

Q.  Who was the first American League shortstop to have a season with thirty home runs, a batting average of .300 or better and at least one hundred runs batted in?

Hint: #1  He is the only Most Valuable Player to claim that honor for a team that lost ninety-five games the same season.

Hint: #2  He once played ninety consecutive games without making an error.

A.  CAL RIPKEN  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  In 1991, Ripken won his 2nd MVP w/34 HR, BA of .323 & 114 RBI.  Coincidentally, he didn’t miss a single game that year.

-  #1  In 1991, BAL’s record was 67-95.  (Painful to imagine their record without him!)

-  #2  90 errorless G = 14-Apr- through 27-Jul-1990.

FCR -  Jerry Kahn, New York City

Incorrect guesses:  Alex Rodriguez, Ernie Banks, Luke Appling, Jackie Jensen, Rico Petrocelli, Vern Stephens, Nomar Garciaparra

IN MEMORIAM

Q.  Who was the most recent Dodger to win a batting title?

Hint: #1  His career pinch-hitting batting average is the highest in major league history.

Hint: #2  A phone call from his hero convinced him where to begin his career.

Hint: #3  He chose the wrong season to have the best year of his career.

Hint: #4  Only Sammy Sosa has had more National League RBI in a year since then.

Hint: #5  He hit home runs for nine teams.

Hint: #6  His career batting average is higher than those of Hall of Fame sluggers Billy Williams, Lou Brock, Harmon Killebrew, Tim Raines, Ton Lazzeri, Larry Doby, Eddie Murray and Carl Yastrzemski, to name a few.

A.  TOMMY DAVIS  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Won NL BA titles in 1962 (.346) and 1963 (.326), both times also leading the majors.  Trea Turner won the NL batting title in 2021, but played ⅔ of his games that year as a Washington National.

-  #1  With 63 H in 197 ;pinch-hitting ABs, Davis ended at .320.

-  #2  Jackie Robinson phoned the Brooklyn born and raised Davis and persuaded him to look past offers from the Phillies & Yankees and become a Dodger.

-  #3  In 1962, Davis led all MLB in H (230), RBI (153) & BA, but it was the same year that his teammate Maury Wills broke Ty Cobb’s once untouchable record of 96 stolen bases in a year, finishing with 104.  It was the same year that Willie Mays led the world with a 10.5 WAR not to mention 49 HR.  Davis finished a strong 3rd in the NL MVP voting.

-  #4  Sosa’s RBI totals in 1998 (158) & 2001 (160) have exceeded Davis’ 1962 number.

-  #5  Davis played for 10 teams in his 18-year career and homered for them all but the Royals, his last stop, where he only came to the plate 20 times.

-  #1  A car crash in 1954 was the initial cause of his back pain and he found that a good chiropractor could ease the pain.  Eventually, he became somewhat adept as an amateur practitioner with what was called “natural skills.”

-  #2  1960-69 = 1,877 H.

FCR -  Ken DiVincenzo, Mayfield Heights, Ohio

A.  KEN GRIFFEY, Jr.  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Hit his 450th on 09-Aug-2001 @ 31 years, 261 days.  His record was actually eclipsed by his former teammate Alex Rodriguez who tallied his 450th HR w/his 2,000th career H at 30 years 356 days on 21-Jul-2006.  So, for a time, as the question implies, Griffey, WAS the youngest.

-  #1  The Ken Griffey Jr. Milk Chocolate Bar debuted in 1989 and was limited to the Seattle market.

-  #2  Griffey ran for president in 1996 on a staunch pro-pepper (the game, not the condiment) platform.*  His campaign ad included appearances from politicos James Carville and Steve Forbes, along with several other MLB stars of the day.  “If you outlaw pepper, only outlaws will play pepper,” Griffey stated boldly in the ad.

*This actually happened—for a Nike commercial.

-  Ans.  He hit 16 HR for CIN in 1901 & 7 for DET in 1908.

-  #1  Had 19 3b in 1915 to lead the AL.  It was the 6th time he had led in that category.

A.  PEE WEE REESE  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Before taking a backwards K in the 1st inning, Reese had worked the count full, the only time that day any Dodger batter had 3 balls in a count.  Who knew that would be the Dodgers’ highlight on offense that day?

-  #1  WS success rate = 14.29%.  Played on the losing side of the WS in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952, 1953 & 1956.  He was on the championship side in 1955.  1 out of 7.

SUNDAY  —10-Apr

Q.  Who was history’s second-ever designated hitter?

Hint: #1  His team of eight seasons traded him away to strengthen their pitching, but all he did was win Comeback Player of the Year that year and then league Most Valuable Player the next.

Hint: #2  One source claims that he is the only first baseman to pull off and be tricked by the hidden ball trick.

A.  ORLANDO CEPEDA  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Ron Blomberg was first, coming up 6th in the 1st inning against Luis Tiant.  The first batter up for BOS in the top of the 2nd of the same G was Cepeda.

-  #1  On 08-May-1966, Cepeda was traded by SFG to STL for Ray Sadecki.  Cepeda was the NL MVP in 1976, becoming only the 2nd player to win ROY & MVP unanimously.  (F. Robinson)

-  #2  Historian Bill Deane has clarified that the other first basemen to be both hidden-ball trickster and trickee are Frank Chance and Fred Merkle.
