2023-10-09 Pitchers who won a postseason game with each of three different teams

MONDAY  — 09-Oct

Q.  Who is the only pitcher to strike out twenty batters in a nine-inning game twice?

Hint: #1  It would appear that he has passed on some of his baseball DNA.

Hint: #2  He once slung a broken bat piece at Mike Piazza’s legs.

A.  ROGER CLEMENS   [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Clemens struck out 20 vs. SEA on 29-Apr-1986 & 20 K again vs. DET on 18-Sep-1996, a double unmatched in MLB history, a double feat unmatched in MLB history and once considered unattainable.

-  #1  Clemens’ son Kody has made it to the majors, but does not seem likely to match his father’s mastery.  Kody is ostensibly an infielder, but has been called on in relief eleven times in his MLB career, never entering a game earlier than the 8th inning & only in games where his team were down by at least 7 runs.

-  #2  In G 2 of the 2000 WS, Clemens had a fielding error misplaying the bat!  His explanation raised  eyebrows.  Details here.

Hint: #3  He holds the record for most strikeouts in a twentieth-century season by a National League right hander.

-  Ans.  From 1988 through 2007, Schilling was a major leaguer for 20 years.

-  #1  In 2001, his record for ARI was 22-6.

- #2  In 2001, he was edged by his teammate for the Cy Young Award.  In that & 2 other seasons, Schilling thrice finished 2nd in the CYA voting.  Fellow Diamondback Randy Johnson won the award in 2001 & 2002.  MIN’s Johan Santana won in 2004.

-  #3  Schilling racked up 319 K for PHI in 1997, 1 of the 3 X he passed the 300K/season threshold.

-  Ans.  In 2000, in his 2nd stint with TOR, Wells’s 15th W came on 08-Jul.  Wells won 6 X for CIN in 1995, helping them win the NL Central.  He pitched 16 X for CHW in 2001.

-  #1  ASG 2000 was won by the AL.  Wells started and gave up no R.  He was the only AL pitcher that day to pitch more than 1 inning or to strike out more than 1 batter.

-  #2  TOR’s 900th = 16-Apr-1989;

         TOR’s 1,110th = 26-Jun -1991;

         TOR’s 1,400th = 05-Aug-1994 w/Wells pitching for DET; &

Hint: #2  Although he has never won a Cy Young Award, he has twice been honored as The Sporting News American League Pitcher of the Year.

Hint: #3  He is a college grad, which although that delayed his debut in the majors, he felt was a better choice in the long run.  It turned out to be a wise choice.

A.   GERRIT COLE  [B-R Bio]

-  Ans.  Cole’s record was 15-4 for the 82-80 4th-place NYY in 2023.

-  #1  K for a season records = HOU (326 in 2019) & NYY (257 in 2022).  The only other pitchers to hold the single-season K records for 2 different franchises are Pedro Martinez (305 for MON in 1997; 313 for BOS in 1999) & Randy Johnson (308 for SEA in 1993; 372 for ARI in 2001).

-  #2  TSN Pitcher of the Year in 2019 & 2021.  He is the heavy favorite for the AL CYA for 2023.

Hint: #2  He was greeted enthusiastically when he strolled the streets of Montreal.

-  Ans. Price got the save in G 7 of the 2008 ALCS which guaranteed sending Tampa Bay to their first Fall Classic.

-  #1  Price was TSN Comeback Player of the Year in 2018 w/BOS.  In 2012, he had his 1st (only) 20-win season, also won the AL CYA & for the 1st time, received MVP votes.
