Q.  Who is the only pitcher whose career was entirely in the Modern Era, to hit more than two hundred batsmen in a career?

Hint: #1  He was the first pitcher to strike out ten batters in a World Series game, twice.

Hint: #2  He won league strikeout crowns for eight consecutive seasons.

A.  PHIL NIEKRO  [SABR Bio]

-  Ans.  Niekro won his 300th G on 06-Oct-1985.  He won 18 more G before retiring.  The only other 300-G winners who never made it to the WS are Pud Galvin (365 W) and Gaylord (314).  Perry did play on a WS team, the 1962 SFG , but was not on their postseason roster.

-  #1  Niekro had turned 46 by the time he won his 300th.  He credited his specialty pitch, the knuckleball, with his longevity, saying that its stress on his pitching arm was more favorable than any other delivery.  He did throw other pitches, but the knuckler was really his calling card.

-  #2  Born in Blaine, Ohio, named after Senator James G. Blaine who served as Secretary of State under presidents Benjamin Harrison, James A. Garfield & Chester A. Arthur.

-  #2  Carlton took a vow of silence toward the media that lasted for most of his 24-year career.  There are those who believe that this approach served him well, having found out later some of the radical conspiracy theories he held.

-  Ans.  Gibson’s career total of 3,117 K were all done for STL in the NL, passing the 3,000 mark in his penultimate season, 1974.  He was eventually joined, then passed, by Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Greg Maddux & John Smoltz.

-  #1  In all, he won 12 straight away G in 1970, from 18-May- to 16-Sep-1970.

-  #2  No-no = 14-Aug-971, the only one of his career.

-  #1  Roy Hartsfield managed Sutton in AA Albuquerque in 1965.  Hartfield was at the field helm of TOR for their first three years of existence 1977-1979.

-  #2  AS MVP in 1977 at Yankee Stadium II.  Sutton was never score on in an ASG for a career ASG ERA of 0.00.

-  Ans.  OAK’s Vida Blue took home not only the 1971 AL Cy Young Award, but the league MVP as well.  Lolich was a close second in the CYA voting and 5th in MVP.

-  #1  From 1971-1974. Lolich pitched 376, 327⅓, 308⅔ & 308 innings for DET.

-  #2  In 1979, Lolich invested in a doughnut shop in Rochester, Michigan, with the understanding that his partner would run the business.  Following disagreements, Lolich bought out his partner and began running the business and called it Lolich Donuts & Pastry shop.  After losing his lease, he moved the doughnut business to Lake Orion in 1983.  In the late 1990s, Lolich sold the doughnut shop and retired.
